Finland’s first Marriott hotel is being built to Westend, in the area between the Western Highway and the sea.
The hotel complex consists of the following facilities:
Marriott Hotel with 270 rooms
Impressive view of the sea from most rooms
High-class Á la Carte Restaurant
Lobby Bar and Café
Executive Business Lounge on the top floor of the hotel
Wellness Spa and gym
Plenty of versatile meeting and congress rooms
Location and accessibility
The location next to the sea and by the Western Highway junction is excellent for a spa and congress hotel. The location provides good accessibility and visibility for business and congress guests, and the proximity of the sea and impressive landscapes will also attract spa and recreational guests. Since the location of the hotel is in the immediate vicinity of the Western Highway junction, it does not increase traffic loads on residential areas or collector streets. The distance to the centre of Tapiola is about 1 km and the centre of Helsinki is a 10-minute drive away. In the immediate vicinity of the hotel are the headquarters of Finland’s largest companies and the Keilalahti, Tapiola and Niittykumpu business centres. The nearest Metro stations of the future Western Metro Extension are in Tapiola and Keilaniemi. Marriott Westend will offer long-needed premium services for companies from the whole metropolitan area, individual recreational guests and neighborhood residents, in the form of meeting rooms, a restaurant, a café and a Wellness Spa. The nearby beach will also be developed; it will go through renovation and receive an own summer café while the hotel is being built.
The hotel markets in Greater Helsinki consist of approximately 11,000 hotel rooms in 70 hotels. Helsinki has maintained its place as one of the world’s largest conference cities. While the population and the amount of work-places increases in the metropolitan area, the demand for high class accommodations and
meeting premises increases.
Marriot Westend brings an excellent addition to Helsinki’s accommodation, congress and recreational services. Marriott will, at the same time, be extending its Marriott regular customer program services – with over 35 million regular guests – to a whole new country.
Project participants and implementation schedule
Real estate development company BMZ-Invest Oy made its first plans of a spa and congress hotel to Westend in the spring of 2005. The current plan, created with Arkkitehtitoimisto Larkas & Laine Oy and the City Planning Department of Espoo, was approved at the City Planning Board of Espoo in 14.1.2009.
Ultivista Oy became the majority owner of the project in the autumn of 2009, and a lease with Marriott was signed in March 2010. The City Council of Espoo approved the plan, enabling the construction of the hotel in 14.12.2009. Complaints against the plan were rejected by the Administrative Court of Helsinki in 2010 and by the Supreme Administrative Court in October 2011. The construction work is due to begin in 2012.
The aim is to open the first Marriott hotel in Westend by the end of 2014. The total budget of the project is approximately € 65 million.
Marriott International, Inc., the operator
